The Research Process

THE RESEARCH PROCESS: AN OVERVIEW

  • STEP 1:  Formulate your initial research question.
  • STEP 2:  Get background information on your topic. (Depending on how much experience you have working with your topic, you may want to begin with this step instead.)
  • STEP 3:  Refine your research question/research topic based on what you have learned.
  • STEP 4:  Consider your resource options: books, articles, websites, primary source documents, data sets, etc.
  • STEP 5:  Select and use the appropriate tools to identify the resources you need to answer your question.
  • STEP 6: Formulate a search strategy using keywords, standardized vocabulary within the discipline, standardized subject headings, etc.
  • STEP 7:  Locate your resources.
  • STEP 8:  Study/evaluate your resources.
  • STEP 9:  Organize and write.
  • STEP 10:  Cite your work/compose your bibliography
