Mini-Ethnography Assignment

From your syllabus:

An ethnographic research project (10-15 pages, double-spaced) dealing with a topic of relevance to the course and of interest to you. Gender must be a component of your project though not necessarily the central focus.

  • Your final paper is due on Monday, May 7, by 5 p.m. papers must be submitted in hard copy to Dr. Zhang's office (Candler 129D): electronic submissions will not be accepted.

This ethnographic project consists of a series of smaller tasks throughout the semester, including:

  1. A brief (one paragraph) proposal (1%) of your research topic, field site, and the group of people you plan to work with. Due on Feb. 20 by 5 p.m.
  2. Three field trips and corresponding field notes (12%). Due dates for fieldnotes entries are Mar. 1, Mar. 22, and Apr. 5. Guidelines to writing ethnographic fieldnotes will be distributed and explained in class in Week 5.
  3. A research proposal (3 pages, double spaced) (5%). Due on March 20 at the beginning of class. Guidelines will be announced in Canvas in Week 6.
  4. An Annotated Bibliography (3 pages, double spaced) (6%) that includes at least six academic texts, including two that were discussed in class. That means you need to do four additional readings for the project. In each entry of your annotated bibliography, you should include the major argument of the text, methods or theories employed, findings and conclusions, and how it is related to your own research project. Due on March 29 at the beginning of class.
  5. Two writing exercises (6%) during writing workshops #1 and #2.
  6. A draft of your final paper (8-10 pages, double spaced) (10%). Due on April 20 at 5 p.m. Please also circulate your draft paper among members of your Peer Review Group.
  7. A final copy of your paper (10-15 pages, double spaced) (20%). Due on May 7 by 5 p.m.
