The collection has several hundred periodicals and contains some of the earliest and most significant homophile publications, representing many of the movement’s most important organizations. It also includes periodicals from the earliest days of queer journalism, such as eight of the nine issues of Vice Versa: America's Gayest Magazine, the first lesbian periodical in the United States 1947.

The collection also has a strong international perspective on the homophile movement with selections of early gay publications from Britain, France, Canada, the Netherlands, and Denmark
