Yoga Research Guide: Yoga Subject Headings

Using LC (Library of Congress) Subject Headings

In the library catalog, books, videos and other materials are assigned Library of Congress (LC) subject headings based on their content. Here is a sample list of yoga- related subject headings, some of which pertain equally to books and videos (visual materials). When you view catalog records in discoverE, these subject headings display as active links pointing to other items with the same subject.

This is not an exhaustive list of subject headings pertinent to yoga, but it should give you a sense of commonly used vocabulary and how subject headings are structured.

Philosophy, Hindu
Hatha Yoga
Patanjali Yogasutra (Note that this is listed as one word rather than "Yoga Sutra")
Bhagavad Gita
Upanishads (a "Uniform Title" as well as a subject heading)
Yoga, Raja

Alternative medicine
Physical fitness

If you are having trouble identifying items with information on a particular topic, try looking in works categorized under a broader subject heading. For example, to find information on the eight "limbs" or "rungs" of Yoga, you might look under the Patanjali Yogasutra, Raja Yoga or Hatha Yoga. This is a general principle you can apply to other subject searching in the library catalog.
