Introduction

As electronic books become more popular, many of our faculty and students have asked about electronic materials in our collections. Some have also wanted to know more about the types of readers that are best for accessing e-books here at Emory.

The Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University has access to some academic e-book collections. Unlike mainstream publishing houses, most academic publishers do not have a version of their titles available in popular e-book formats for download to Kindles, Readers, Nooks, or other portable devices; however, many readers have Web browsers built in, and you may be able to get access to some titles.

Check the tab for "Ebook Providers and Use" for further details.

We will attempt to keep the guide as current as possible, but with frequent changes in technology and the rapid evolution of e-books, this may prove to be a challenge. Please contact the Library Service Desk if you have any questions.

Tips for Searching the Catalog

Finding e-books in discoverE begins when you conduct your first search. On the left-hand side of the results screen, you will see a listing called "Refine My Results."  Click on "ebooks" to limit to ebooks.

Ebook Advocacy

Emory subscribes to the Ebook advocacy statements developed at Duke:

  • Reading (accomodate personal preference in research, teaching and learning.
  • Conceptualization (should be easily identified in the search platform of choice)
  • Theory Formation (support the researcher's need to compare arguments simultaneously from several sources)
  • Collaboration (support communication and knowledge transfer)
  • Publishing (available to readers simultaneously in all formats)
  • Documenting (enables the researcher to search, save and cite)
