Past Masters
Full-text electronic editions of classic western philosophical, theological and literary authors, from ancient times to the early twentieth century and including personal writings as well as major works. All texts available in English translation. Some texts also available in Latin, French, or German.

Purpose of this Guide

The purpose of this guide is to aid you in locating journal articles and other resources that you will need to complete your research paper.

Philosopher's Index (EBSCO)
Indexes books and journals in philosophy and related fields. It covers the areas of ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, and logic as well as material on the philosophy of law.

L'Année philologique
An international bibliography that contains citations for Greek and Roman studies. The database covers all aspects of classical languages, literatures, history, philosophy, art, religion, music, mythology, science, numismatics, and other subjects. Its scope is the period from 2000 BC to 800 AD.

Social Sciences Abstracts
A bibliographic database that indexes journals in the social sciences, including anthropology, political science, sociology, economics, and related fields. Coverage includes a wide range of interdisciplinary fields covered in a broad array of social sciences journals.

Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS)
Indexes books, periodicals and selected local, state, national, and international government documents in the areas of public policy, social policy and the social sciences (primarily economics, anthropology, sociology, public health, and political science), going back to 1915. To acquire results prior to 1960, be sure to change the first part of your date range to "earliest."

Handbooks, companions, and guides provide comprehensive introductions to a variety of topics. They introduce readers to the relevant debates surrounding an issue and provide a framework for readers to become acquainted with the most important scholarship on a subject. For these reasons, they can be very useful for people who are just getting started researching a topic or person.
